Training Multiple Dogs

Multiple Dog Leash

Training multiple dogs can give you a headache. Having more than one dog can be a challenge. In fact, it is a challenge and you should be prepared for what will be ahead. This is not to say having a few dogs cannot be done, all I am saying is that you must expect more work. We tend to think of the fun side of things when owning more than one dog. Yet we tend to forget the work part. Never forget the amount of care it will take to keep up with two dogs, let alone three or four.

bad behavior for good.

Multiple dogs can leave you with multiple headaches. It can also bring you much more joy when watching your pets grow. The choice is up to you and you have to learn to decide which route you want to take. As for training, it will take a little bit more money but most of what will be taken is your time and your energy. You may even get lucky and purchase a dog that is already somewhat trained, or needs very little of it.

If you do buy more than one dog, considering they are puppies, they need time alone. The problems arise when dogs are always with each other (similar to always being with an owner). Your puppies just might develop a case of separation anxiety when they are split for whatever reason. Dogs can develop separation anxiety not only with humans but also with their kin. Take special care when you decide to begin separation and training.

If you have decided upon getting multiple dogs, then you must train each one by itself. It will be easier to distinguish the individual problems each one might be having. You will also run into problems of having one dog dominant over the other. You want to try and curve this as much as possible. The reason being is that one dog will always feel like it has to give in to the whims of the other. Each dog should be free and be independent of the other. This will allow a little more freedom when taking them all for a walk, if you dare to. A multiple dog leash would be a great option when doing this.

When you have a dog that is always giving in to the whims of the other, you are going to be left with an animal that is nervous or scared. You will have an aggressive dog and an anxious dog. Not exactly what you had in mind a few years back when you saw them both so cute looking in the store window was it?

Keep yourself a schedule and stick to that schedule. Make sure to give each dog a unique name and to have a command to call them both back at once. This isn’t that important if you only have a couple of dogs or don’t mind calling them by name. If you have a bunch though, you better get that single command working for your fast. With each dog responding to their own name, unique training on both individuals can begin. Think of it as training a single puppy or dog, but instead you have to do it twice. -- Dog Treats
