Put an end to your dog's
bad behavior for good.

Dogs by nature are a wild pack of wolves really. Only in later and recent times have they really outgrown the wild into a household item. They have become civilized in rather modern history. This cannot however, throw out the thousands of years of their instinctive behavior. When a pack hunts, they focus on thing, the thing they are hunting. This is better known as a prey drive.

The prey drive is the drive you want to keep your animal focused on. What are they going to focus on? The focus will be on you, but don’t worry; it doesn’t plan to eat you. If your dog always has its nose in the dirt or in the air and loves to stalk animals, it probably has a very strong prey drive and this can be used to your advantage. How do you use this to your advantage? Well for starters, you can train the animal much easier in a game of fetch than most breeds could be.

Work, patience, and dedication, are three main ingredients that will help your dog focus its attention on the object of your choice. It is important to keep in mind that without a drive, the dog has no desire to do the task you have asked it to do. For example, if you have no interest in going to a family reunion, are you going to be excited to get ready for it on the day of the occurrence? Most likely not and thus is the same way with your pet pooch.

So how can you keep your pet pooch motivated to do the training you want it to do? If you can keep its drive alive, you will keep the motivation alive. With motivation, you have energy and a desire to complete the task at hand. This is what you want to achieve. How do you keep the drive alive? This can be difficult depending on the mood your dog is in, if it even does have mood swings. For the most part, if you can keep it wanting more, such as a treat, or your approval with a petting, this will be enough.

Remember, it is important to learn and understand from your animal. It will let you know a lot about how it feels and this should be relatively easy for you to counter with an appropriate measure of training. How the dog feels is how you should treat it at that very moment. The process is almost so simple it will amaze you. When the dog wants to sleep, let it nap, but also encourage it to do more, praise it when it does good, and it will continue to do good for you as a loyal companion. -- Keep Your Pooch Off of The Couch
