A dog will learn that it is ok to be on their own only if you teach it to be. If you are constantly giving your dog unneeded attention, of course it is going to bark when you leave for a while. It may even bark if you leave for just five minutes. The weight is on your shoulders because a dog cannot learn on its own. It needs the instruction of someone who does know and that is you.

A great way to teach the dog that it can survive on its own is to practice leaving the area. Leave your dog a toy so this can distract its attention away from you. Next, leave the room without even looking at the animal. Come back a few minutes later and don't even respond to the dog but rather continue with what you were doing. This can be done outside, inside, or anywhere you please. Do it just as long as there is a place where you can leave the dog in a closed and quiet place.

Dogs that bark do so because of a problem with their owner. You must learn to teach your animal that it is ok to live on its own for a little while. A dog that will bark excessively normally does so because it is used to receiving attention on a non-stop basis. This is true for most of the barking cases out there. A family knows no better and will just want to pet their puppy all day long. This is great but when it comes time to actually deal with your dog's problem, they would of wished they had not been so cuddly all the time. When you train your dog to respect your time and space, you will have a better relationship with the animal in almost every aspect of life.

Dogs know when you are going to be leaving the house. This is not because they are smart, but rather based on instinct and pattern. A good way to keep your dog from barking upon your daily departure is to practice a few false departures. Make the dog confused and see if this helps any. Do not sit down and pat the dog on the head and rub it for ten minutes before you leave. This is the absolute worst thing you could ever do.

The best thing to do when you plan to leave the house is to do it quietly and do not distrub your puppy. Feed your dog, make sure it has enough drink and meal, then set out for your day. Also remember to leave a few chew toys around. This will help the dog with its energy and loneliness to a certain extent. Do not say good bye to the dog and rub it. Remember, the quieter you can leave, the better. For those of you that have problems with the "dog next door", there is not much you can do. The only way to stop the neighbors barking dog is to share this information with them, or ask them to build a privacy fence. -- Why Is There Excessive Dog Barking All the Time?
