Does your dog crave attention and is it an attention seeker? This could well be a sign that you may be lacking some attention giving to your pet. Communication is the key in the animal kingdom and the dog is very direct when it talks with you. It will let you know what it wants and it will do its best to try every means possible. Sometimes, though unfortunately, barking is the way of letting you know.
You should teach your dog from day one that it is not alright to bark whenever it pleases. This kind of behavior, left untreated, will cause a major headache down the line and you will wish you never got a dog. You have to practice entering and leaving a room each day when the dog is young. Praise the dog for its behavior of silence and don’t overreact when you greet it upon entering the room.
You have to separate normal barking from extreme barking however. Also take into consideration that some breeds of dog love to bark constantly or a lot more than other kinds, poodles for example. Some poodles bark so much you can hear dog barking all over the block.I don’t know what it is about the poodle but every one I have ever seen just loved to bark all the time. If you can stand the constant barking all day, then a poodle just might be the dog for you. If you had hoped for a quieter breed though and your dog is a bit too noisy, then you need to undergo some form of training with your pet.
Extreme forms of barking include that of barking because you go into the bathroom, barking because you are in the kitchen, barking because you sneezed, barking because you are on the phone, and you get the point. Normal occurrences of barking are those of sudden noises, greeting a visitor, playing tug-of-war (although could be early signs of aggression) and so on. Once you have the normal separated from the extreme, it’s time to begin dissecting the problem.
You could always turn the bad behavior into something, such as making your dog bark on command but you should really focus on making the dog get off the behavior which is annoying in the first place. Reward the dog with a treat when it stops barking. Remember to pat it on the head too. -- Dog Barking
